Gerard Butler has pulled out of a scheduled trip to Saudi Arabia to screen his new movie, Hunter Killer, because of the disappearance and possible murder of Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi. The actor was supposed to screen the movie in the capital city of Riyadh and was looking forward to going since Saudi Arabia lifted its 35-year ban on movies. He said the timing of his trip “couldn’t have been worse… We heard about Khashoggi going missing the day before we were supposed to leave, two days before, but the next day was when we had to go and it just didn’t feel like a smart move. It felt very insensitive, so we thought we’re going to stay away from that.” Khashoggi disappeared two weeks ago after he attended a meeting at the Saudi consulate in Turkey. U.S. and Turkish officials believe the Saudis had him murdered.
